City Council Wrap Up 11/7/24

Swearing-In of New Firefighters
Two new firefighters, Nathan Blank and Mason Young, were sworn in by Mayor Ryan Grubbs. Both recent graduates of William Henry Harrison High School, they completed EMT training at Cincinnati State. Their families participated in the ceremony by pinning their badges.


American Legion Donations
The American Legion presented several donations to local organizations:

  • $1,000 to Reach Out Pregnancy Center, which has served 125 clients this year with nearly 950 visits.
  • $5,500 to the Police Department for new vehicle computers.
  • $5,000 to the Fire Department.
  • $3,000 to the Mayor’s Fund for assistance to residents.

The Legion announced it has donated over $175,000 to the Harrison community this year, primarily supporting local schools and community resources.


Planning & Zoning Updates
Council member Jerry Wilson outlined the agenda for the upcoming Planning Commission meeting on November 12, which will address:

  • Conditional use permits on West Road and Kilby Road.
  • Approval of applications for new businesses and zoning map changes. Wilson also congratulated the Harrison High School football team on reaching the second round of playoffs and extended congratulations to re-elected officials Cindy Abrams and Congressman Warren Davidson.

Veterans Day Programs
The council reminded the public of Veterans Day programs on November 7 at Harrison High School (8:15 AM) and Harrison Elementary (1:15 PM). The events will honor veterans with special recognition and community participation.


Mayor’s Report on Infrastructure & Community Engagement
Mayor Grubbs reported on ongoing infrastructure plans with JMA Engineering to improve roadways and intersections, with a finalized plan expected by December. He also highlighted a productive visit from Congressman Warren Davidson and a senior Halloween event at the community center, encouraging seniors to explore the center’s growing program offerings.


Christmas Parade Announcement
Council member Wilson shared details on the Christmas Parade, scheduled for December 7 with a “Candy Christmas” theme. The parade will start at 4:30 PM, followed by a tree lighting ceremony. Entry is free, but participants are asked not to include a Santa figure, as the event will feature one official Santa.


Finance Committee & Budget Update
The Finance Committee continues to review the 2025 city budget, with final adjustments to be presented by December. Councilmember Tony Samuels shared updates on recent budget amendments, including network upgrades, school zone signage, and a water rate study currently underway to address revenue shortages in the water fund.
